Walk a portion of the historic road connecting Tokyo and Kyoto
The Old Tokaido Road connected the imperial and cultural capitol of Kyoto with the political and commercial capitol of Tokyo. The Tokaido was the most famed and travelled of the roads crisscrossing Japan. Many people are familiar with the art of Hiroshige Utagawa’s “53 Stations of the Tokaido” that depicted life along this road in Ukiyo-e prints. Hakone has one of the best preserved sections that allows you to walk among the towering cedar trees on the road used by samurai, shogun, and princesses of the past.
