One of the "big three," said to be home to a sacred sword

There are three "super-shrines" in Japan, and Atsuta is one of them. Legend states that there is a sword kept somewhere deep in the inner sanctuary of the shrine. "So?", you may ask. This legendary sword is named "Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi" and, if it really exists, it is nothing less than the Japanese Excalibur, for those of you familiar with Arthurian myth. If this isn't reason enough to visit, it is a peaceful place (apart from New Year's Eve and New Year) with lots of little paths as well as the route to the main shrine. Don't miss the back path behind the main shrine.
