A castle town with pristine Japanese scenery and traditional crafts passed down through generations
Short trip from Kyoto to Kanazawa

I recommend this course!

Yu Weixing / I'm from Shanghai, China / I have lived in Japan for 10 years.

Profile

10 years ago, I came from Shanghai as an overseas student to Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, and now I work here while volunteering at the same time. When I went to graduate school in Tokyo, I participated in the "JAPAN TENT" international exchange event organized by Kanazawa, and experienced life here. I was fascinated by the long history of arts and culture that had been passed down for generations in Kanazawa, the local cuisine that made use of the bounties of nature, and the simple, humble, and honest people present here. When the Hokuriku Shinkansen went into service, I took it as a chance to come back to this region, whose people are full of warmth.

As its name suggests, Kanazawa ("Kana" meaning "gold") produces 99% of domestic gold leaf crafts and 100% domestic silver leaf crafts in Japan. Ever since Maeda Toshiie started the Kaga clan in 1583, the rich culture possessed by the Kaga fiefdom was famous both inside and outside of Japan. In Kanazawa, you can see: Kenroku-en Garden, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan; Omicho Market, the best and largest fresh food market in the Hokuriku region; the tea districts, which have never been damaged by war and have been preserved; geisha culture; and iconic traditional craft cultures such as Kutani porcelain and Kaga-Yuzen dyeing that have been handed down through the generations. Make sure not to miss out on the chance to experience making your own traditional crafts as you visit the castle town, which is as bustling as it was in the old days. Why not make a gold leaf craft for a unique, one-of-a-kind present?
