Majestic lake, river, and mountains combine to offer incredible scenic views
Short trip from Tokyo to Towada

I recommend this course!

Mark Inada / I'm from Honolulu, USA / I have lived in Japan for 3 years.

Profile

I moved to Aomori Prefecture, Japan in April 2014 and have been working as a Coordinator for International Relations on the JET Program for three years.
I am a Japanese-American born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, and I currently live in Aomori City and work in the Aomori Prefectural Office's Tourism and International Relations Division. My main duties are promoting Aomori's sightseeing spots to overseas guests and facilitating international exchange. With that said, work duties aside, I personally think Aomori has some of the most stunning natural scenery to enjoy in all of Japan.

The Towada region is best defined by its spectacular natural beauty. The poetic combination of flowing water, towering mountains, and abundant flora that changes color with the seasons makes for unforgettable scenic views. For those looking to leave the neon lights and bustle of the metropolises behind and experience nature and traditional culture in their purest forms, Aomori's Towada region is an ideal destination. The defining feature of the region is Lake Towada, an expansive body of water on the border of Aomori and Akita that formed after a massive volcanic eruption that caused a cave-in. Standing on one edge of the lake, the water seems to stretch on forever like an ocean. The region also boasts the Hakkoda Mountain Range and Oirase River, along with abundant opportunities to experience local cuisine and try your hand at traditional arts and crafts.
