Experience a Western-style summer retreat amid the traditions of Japan
Short trip from Tokyo to Karuizawa

I recommend this course!

Wen Chen / I'm from China / I have lived in Japan for 21 years.

Profile

I was in primary school when I came to Japan with my parents, who were moving for work-related reasons. I lived in Ueda, Nagano until graduating from high school, when I moved to Tokyo to attend university. After university, I returned to Nagano. I now work in tourism in Karuizawa, one of Japan's top resort towns, where I endeavor every day to convey the joys of the region's culture to the many tourists who visit the town from overseas.

When a Canadian, Alexander Croft (A.C.) Shaw, a minister of the Anglican Church of the U.K, visited Karuizawa in 1886, he was so impressed by the town's beautiful scenery that he built Karuizawa's first holiday home two years later. Many prominent people came to know about Karuizawa as a summer resort thanks to Mr. Shaw's recommendation. Writers, artists, financiers, and others came from the city to spend some restful time in Karuizawa. Just 70 minutes from Tokyo by Hokuriku Shinkansen, Karuizawa is one of Japan's most popular resort areas visited by about 8 million tourists every year. The town's scenery, delightful in every season, and its great food have earned rave reviews from those who have holiday homes here. Another draw is the chance to enjoy sports throughout the year with offerings including curling, skiing, golf, and tennis.
