History, tradition, Sanuki Udon, modern art, and charm: Takamatsu has it all
Short trip from Osaka to Takamatsu

I recommend this course!

Jeremy Lanig / I'm from Albany, Oregon / I have lived in Japan for 10 years.

Profile

I have been living in the scenic countryside of Kagawa since 2006.
The perfect balance of nature and civilization here reminds me of my hometown, Albany, Oregon. I currently manage and teach at an English conversation school that I co-founded in Mitoyo City and Takamatsu City. In my free time, I love to explore Kagawa, take photos, and participate in local activities such as festivals and sporting events.
I have a Japanese wife who was born and raised in Kagawa. One of our favorite things to do together is ride our motorcycles around to local Sanuki Udon shops which have the best udon in Japan.

Takamatsu is the capital of Kagawa Prefecture in Shikoku Island, a place best known for its Sanuki Udon (wheat noodles). The shopping arcade, which has the longest combined length in Japan, has an intriguing mix of old, traditional shops with modern shops and restaurants. Not far from the shopping area is one of Japan’s most famous, historical gardens, Ritsurin Garden, which was designated a “Special Place of Scenic Beauty.” It’s easy to lose track of time when relaxing in the traditional strolling garden built for the feudal lord. Takamatsu also borders the Seto Inland Sea, which together with its islands, was one of Japan’s first national parks. The remains of Takamatsu Castle can be found next to the sea in Tamamo Koen Park. For anyone interested in Japanese history, Yashima was the stage for the Battle of Yashima during the Genpei War.
